What is a Dry Hydrant? A dry hydrant is a pipe system permanently installed in existing ponds and other sources of surface water. It provides a ready source of suction supply of water to a tank truck.

Purpose: To assist local governments in developing water sources for Rural Volunteer Fire Departments and to help maintain gravel roads.

Assistance Available: The RC&D Council, through a grant from the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority will provide materials to the county commissioners to implement a Dry Hydrant program.

Council Responsibility: Council purchases required materials, schedules pickup or delivery with fire coordinator and maintains records on all hydrants.

County Responsibility: County Commissions are responsible for installation of the dry hydrants. Also, the county is responsible for any work and materials needed to provide all weather access to the site, drainage and erosion control.

Fire Department Responsibility: The Volunteer Fire Departments are responsible for site selection, obtaining written permission for access from landowners and providing maps and directions for sites.
